Over 10 years, Internews grew its flagship data journalism program to improve the health and wellbeing of all Kenyans through Data Dredger, a hub for all things open data and data journalism in the country. Data journalism activities included in-depth fellowships, accompanied grants, data literacy sessions and press conferences to gradually introduce and permanently change the Kenyan media landscape to include data-driven storytelling. Activities focused on Kenya’s most serious development challenges: HIV and AIDS, reproductive health, maternal and child health, extractive industries and economics, spanning all forms of mainstream media, online and digital platforms. The program is credited with positioning Kenya as a leader in data journalism in Africa and spurring the Kenyan government to change several laws to improve the lives of its citizens.
